# Build your first agent

Create a draft, test it in your browser and prepare a safe first launch.

## Before you start
You need a Verbatik account, a workspace, approved business information and a clear task for the agent. A phone number and booking connection are only needed when you deploy those features.

For a first veterinary receptionist, prepare your clinic name, opening hours, address, services, emergency contact, appointment policy and an unforwarded staff number. Decide who will review the test results.

## Create and configure
1. [Sign up or sign in](https://dashboard.verbatik.com/sign-up), then complete workspace onboarding.
2. Open **Build → Agents → Create an agent**. Select **Voice agent**, then a single prompt or conversation flow.
3. Choose a template or **Build from scratch**, name the agent and select a language and voice model.
4. Replace template examples with your clinic's approved facts. In the editor, review **System prompt**, **Welcome message** and **Voice & language**.
5. Attach the knowledge base and only the integration functions the agent needs. A booking instruction alone cannot create an appointment.
6. Select **Save**. Open **Test** and try text, then audio.

## Verify the outcome
Ask for opening hours, interrupt a long answer, correct a pet's name, request an unsupported service and ask to speak to staff. Confirm the transcript and any tool outcome. For a booking, check the record in the connected booking system.

Select **Publish** only after review. Publishing creates a version; connecting a phone number or widget controls where callers can reach it. It does not buy a number or enable a disabled account.

Continue with [phone setup](/deploy/phone-numbers/), [booking integrations](/integrations/bookings/) or [website widgets](/deploy/widgets/).
